Battersea has recently received the Silver certification from Investors in the Environment (iiE). iiE are a national environmental management accreditation scheme that requires organisations to demonstrate their commitment to the environment.
Having previously received the Bronze accreditation in 2021, this certification recognises our continual progress to reduce our carbon footprint and overall environmental impact. Our environmental programme is also helping us reduce waste and save money that can then instead be directed towards caring for our animals.
In order to progress from Bronze to Silver accreditation, Battersea took several steps to meet the new sustainable targets. We started monitoring the use of additional resources which included paper and our anesthetic gases used in clinic. We demonstrated the progress being made towards meeting our reduction targets. Battersea also developed and published an internal sustainable travel plan that aims to empower our staff and volunteers to make informed, sustainable travel choices.
Also, we calculated the carbon footprint for transport related emissions and undertook supplementary sustainability projects. These extra projects included Battersea staff picking up litter on and around our London site, gardening workshops, and monthly educational webinars on environmental topics.
