He's Out of This World! Affectionate Deaf Dog Reaches 100-day Milestone in Battersea's Care

15 Jun 2023

A sweet-natured two-year-old German Shepherd called Comet is looking for a home to call his own after spending over 100 days in the care of leading animal welfare charity, Battersea.

Comet arrived at Battersea’s London centre in January as a nervous stray with very sore ears due to a bad infection which caused him to be very uncomfortable. After undergoing specialist ear surgery, performed by Battersea’s expert veterinary team, Comet is now getting used to life as a deaf dog.

Since having surgery, Comet has been healing well and is gaining more confidence each day. He has been working hard on his training with Battersea’s specialist staff, using a range of training techniques such as hand signals and body gestures in place of verbal commands to learn new skills and getting him used to unexpected touches to avoid being startled. Comet has made good progress and is looking for new owners who can continue with his training in his new home.

Described by the charity’s staff as a gentle giant, Comet has transformed into a relaxed and affectionate dog who loves nothing more than receiving plenty of fuss from his human friends, especially a well-earned belly rub. He is also a big foodie and enjoys being treated to a tasty snack or relaxing in his kennel with a chew to gnaw on.

Talking about Comet, Louise Goodbody, Kennel Team Leader at Battersea, said: “After arriving at Battersea in poor condition and needing lots of medical attention, Comet has made great progress during his time with us and is responding to training well. Despite being unable to hear, he has proven to be such a clever boy and has already mastered hand signals for ‘watch me’, pointing for direction cues and thumbs up for praise.

“Comet is such a goofy character and a giant puppy at heart, he loves spending his days playing games with his ever-growing collection of toys with plenty of cuddle breaks in between! He is sure to make a loyal and loving addition to the right home.”

Comet would prefer to be the only dog in the home and have access to a private garden where he can bound around to burn off some energy and work on his training with no distractions.
