Four-year-old Jack Russell Terrier Mango was found straying in a park by a kind member of the public, who brought him to Battersea.

The friendly, yet worried dog had a note tucked into his collar describing him as, “the best boy ever, who deserves a family who will play fetch with him all day long.”

Mango found being in Battersea kennels challenging, often barking for attention, and finding it hard to settle. He was unsure around new people and other dogs, sometimes giving a concerned growl when he was feeling overwhelmed. Mango was also found to have some lameness in his hind leg and x-rays revealed that he would need surgery to fix a damaged cruciate ligament, so that he could have a good chance at a pain-free life.

Battersea’s skilled behaviorists began training with Mango to help boost his confidence. As a food motivated dog, he responded well when treats were involved.

Mango’s surgery was a success, but it was to be a lengthy road to recovery, during which he needed to remain calm and not overexercise. To assist in his healing, Mango was prescribed a course of physiotherapy and laser therapy with Battersea’s skilled clinic team. The brave dog did very well with his exercises and three weeks post-surgery, he was ready to start hydrotherapy sessions in Battersea's state-of-the-art facilities.

Mango was still finding kennels stressful, so he spent some time on foster with Battersea staff to help ease his fears and to recuperate in peace.

Mango thrived on foster, showing off his playful side and continuing his training. However, when he returned to Battersea, he became vocal around strangers and other dogs, so he spent time in Battersea offices with different people and on calm walks with other dogs, to build positive associations with both. Bit by bit, Mango’s confidence improved and eventually he was socialising with various people and dogs, even outside. Battersea’s dedicated behaviour team were delighted with Mango's progress and after weeks of rehabilitation, Mango was using his injured leg well.

After three months at Battersea, Mango was at last ready to find a new home. His adoring new family say that Mango’s confidence has soared, and he has filled their hearts with love.
